Unfinished Sympathy- Massive Attack: Analysis
Mise En Scene
Camera shots / angles
The director uses a tracking shot in the music video as it follows her down the street, to show the street around her and what it is like.He has done this so that it make the audience feel like they are following her down the street, and also to make you feel as it you are also seeing what is going on, The use of different people/ 'extras' may suggest that the director was trying to get across different messages. (For example the stereotypical 'gang' with a 'vicious' dog may be trying to get an authoritative message across.
(To show that they are in charge etc).

Lighting
In the music video natural lighting/daylight is used to show that the video is real and that it is how the street actually looks, apposed to using lighting in a studio.
Settings
The music video was set on a street as it shows the realism of the street and what people are like. The majority of the shops along the street are clothes shops/ children's shops.
Locations
The music video for 'unfinished sympathy' was filmed in Los Angeles (was filmed from 1311 South New Hampshire Avenue to 2632 West Pico Boulevard in Los Angeles, California.)
Costume
The singer is wearing a black outfit- so she doesn't stand out that much, however she doesn't blend in as she is the only one wearing black so she stands out to make the background more colourful by her wearing the black outfit.
Props
The use of the props suggests that they have been used to show a run down area of Los Angeles, for example the Graffiti, litter and the bin bags full of rubbish on the streets. They busy street tells us that the road she walks along was a busy road/ a main road. Children are playing on the busy street without supervision and a child playing with a toy gun, may leave the audience thinking that the adults are not responsible for their children and everyone is responsible for themselves, instead on each other. At the end of the video 'Nelson' is seen walking away from the people she had passed, as if she is walking away from everything in general. The gang stereotype is shown when a group of men with tattoos are holding a 'violent' dog on a lead (which is wearing sunglasses). At the start of the music video a man with black gloves on has two steel balls in his hand.
Empty shopping trolleys may have been used to show that people have not put things back and are irresponsible.

Makeup
Natural/basic make-up was used on 'Nelson' in the music video, which again shows that she is trying to fit in with the crowd. However some of the 'extras' are wearing a lot of make-up, which suggests that they want to stand out and be different.
Editing
There is not a lot of editing in the music video as the whole point of the video is to keep it as real as possible.
Sound
The song for the music video is playing (Non-diegetic). At the very start of the video and at the very end of the video street noise can be heard, for example cars. (Diegetic sounds). The music fades into the background at the end of the song, as she is walking away, which may suggest that 'the song has faded into the background, so she is fading/walking away.
