Ok Go: Representation in Music Video
OK Go: Representation in Music Video
1. How are OK Go representing themselves?
OK Go have represented themselves as different and standing out from the crowd. In all three of these music videos they have used unusual dances and settings in their music videos. For example in the 'Here it goes again' they have used treadmills to show their 'tricks'. This distinctly makes them unique as no one has created a music video like this before. This music video makes it look like there has been little money used on it. Due to the fact that the setting is very basic. Whereas in the music video obsession they have used a lot of printers and paper to create a background, as well as using wires so they can do tricks ion the air. Non-continuity editing and fast paced editing were used in these music videos to make their movements seem unnatural. The use of this again indicates that they are different and this style of music video hasn't been created again. Non-diegetic sounds are used, which is the music. Where as in 'obsession' diegetic sounds are used, as they use a guitar and instruments in the video. The mise en scene in each of the music video is different. In the music video for the song 'Here it goes again' There are only treadmills and a silver background. There is no lighting obvious as it looks like a warm yellow tone light. It also looks low budget. Which may be what they were looking for to stand out and not follow the crowd. In the 'End love' music video they are wearing colourful outfits so they again stand out. The video is set outside (possibly in a park). There are lots of extras in the video as they get involved and also dance. In the music video of the song 'obsession' they are wearing white clothes and have a colourful background. Slow motion is used in some of their 'dancing'/ movements. So it fits with the music. OK Go want to appeal to their fans by standing out and being unique so that they can show that they are different from main stream bands.
2. What Media Language is present in all three music videos giving them a unique identity?
In all three of the Ok Go's music videos media language is present to give them the unique identity they want. In the music video for 'Here it goes again' one continuous take is used to create a finish that is more realistic to the audience. In the music video for 'End love' it had been sped up to show unrealistic movements and also slow motion had been used to show their creativity in their music videos. Bright colours are used in all of the videos to show that they stand out form any other band. The different uses of colours suggests that they can show their uniqueness and creativity to their audience.
3. Why do you think they have adopted this representation?
They may have adopted this representation to allow their fans to follow their success. The uniqueness and creativity of their music videos shows that they spend a lot of time and effort to create a memorable video for their fans. They have gained more fans over the years due to their music videos not being boring and basic.
