Production
  • Produced by Walt Disney pictures
  • Co-produced by Justin Favreau
  • It was partly based on Disney's original version and it also used more of Kipling's original book
  • Gives a darker tone
  • Live action version
  • The largest part of what is seen on screen was produced using CGI
  • Favreau admits 'I think it's considered live action.' (What category it is in)
  • Film to be part homage
  • Fades from hand-drawn into CG
  • Characters were created on computer (British digital house MPC))
  • Realistic look- not cute and cuddly cartoon-style animations
  • Target audience= targets older movie-goers
  • Humour would be too broad for a live action
  • Disney were quite open to Favreau's new approach (Character)
  • Favreau went back through the structure of the book and saw what Kipling did.
  • Focus on the images that I remember from it
  • Cartoon- All male in the 1967 version= in the 2016 version men and women were characters
  • Layers (Multi-plane)
  • Music from- original movie
  • Some of the shots were from other Disney films (Bambi)
  • 1967 character for King Louis was a racist representation of the voice actor. In the 2016- Christopher Walkin was the Monkey, who is not of another ethnic group.
Ownership, marketing and distribution
  • Disney leads the world in production and distribution of popular culture.
  • Re-packaging it for a new audience (live action)
  • Planned by Walt Disney's studios chairman Alan Horn
  • They revive classic characters for a new generation of kids. (Willing to shell out for related merchandised)
  • DVD sales are declining and digital downloads are on the rise
  • Sean Bailey credited the divisions escalating success rate to the silo system instituted by Disney chairman Bob Iger and managed by Alan Horn
  • Disney's annual collective output usually does not exceed a dozen
  • In terms of Disney being a conglomerate, diversified etc.
  • Jungle book was highly dependent of other countries (e.g. MPC)
  • 2016 was distributed by Walt Disney studios motion pictures
  • Warner Brothers produces their own version of the jungle book
  • Favreau was aware of the technological inter-relationship between the making of the film and its promotion. 'telling an old story with new technology'
  • Convergence- Uses social media- JB16- social media accounts (Behind the scenes and teasers etc...) Kept promotion of the Jungle Book
  • Traditional marketing devices (Theatrical trailers, posters, newspapers and print)
  • Snapchat- Sc filter (Karr the snake)
  • Competitions (win prizes)
  • Produced in 3D and 2D- First film to be released in Dolby Vision 3D (10% of U.S showings were in IMAX
  • DVD and Blue ray as well as digital downloads
  • Soundtrack album Walt Disney Records
